Hodgdon triple 7 powder load data

It would be a bit negligent not to mention Hodgdon's Triple Seven powder and pellets on a muzzleloading section, as it is now regarded as the finest commonly available propellant for blackpowder arms. And I cannot disagree. Despite a few shrill cries from those who felt you somehow " needed " to measure powder to muzzleload, consumers voted quickly and strongly for convenience with their purchasing dollars and the current "Pellet Dynasty" was born. Combined with saboted projectiles, it wasn't long before loose blackpowder and Pyrodex performance levels were shattered, with "magnum muzzleloading mania" that hasn't stopped since.

Burning progressively down the bore, Pyrodex pellets can produce muzzle velocities from today's muzzleloading rifles exceeding fps, just as published in current in-line muzzleloading catalogs.

Despite this performance potential, most experienced muzzleloaders that I know long ago correctly recognized the hyperbole of muzzleloading manufacturers as more sizzle than bacon.

Deer hunting remains a sub yard game, and a 90 to grain charge putting a quality bullet in the right place is more than adequate to stock the meat locker. Most muzzleloaders I've tested operate most accurately within a fairly narrow range of 90 to grains of loose powder. The fact that 50 grain pellets were introduced first takes advantage of that. I won't say that "recoil is for chumps," but I won't completely deny it, either.

Pyrodex has become the standard blackpowder-esque muzzleloading propellant, with wide availability and consistent performance. To date, the majority of my sub one-half inch yard groups have been with nothing but a pair of Pyrodex pellets. Consistent compaction and moisture content seems to have a lot to do with it, courtesy of Hodgdon quality control. In Hodgdon did it again, introducing their "Triple Seven" loose powder.

Triple Seven is apparently an gluconic acid sugar-based propellant that is far more efficient than blackpowder or Pyrodex, with corresponding increases in muzzle velocity. The exact recipe is no doubt hidden away in Chris Hodgdon's secret vault surrounded by a moat full of vicious salt water crocodiles, but carbon-based fuels need, err, carbon to burn. If not charcoal, there are few more economical options than sugar. The problem has always been the carmelization process, where several previous attempts have failed to achieve consistency, but Hodgdon has finally done it right.

In no way a "black powder performance substitute," the pressures generated by Triple Seven are greater than the Pyrodex or blackpowder genre products, and so are the muzzle velocities. Triple Seven pellets followed inand they likewise offer higher velocities in three pellet configuration than their Pyrodex counterparts though less accuracyas they can produce more gas in a finite barrel volume. The two pellet velocities have been virtually interchangeable with Pyrodex pellets, however.

Still, almost without exception, the most accurate loads have not been the fastest loads, and deer don't seem to care how fast you miss them.Powder left in the reloader's powder measure hoppers for extended periods, overnight or several days, should be avoided. Powder needs to be stored in original containers ONLY, when not in use. Numerous modern smokeless powders are double base in construction, containing both Nitrocellulose and Nitroglycerine.

Do not subject Pellets to impact or friction. Store Pellets in original container in a cool, dry place, away from primers, explosives, solvents, gasoline, or other sources of ignition.

Always wear ear and eye protection when handling, loading and firing firearms, and using Pellets. Discharging firearms in poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, or handling ammunition may result in exposure to lead and other substances known to cause birth defects, reproductive harm, and other serious physical injury. Have adequate ventilation at all times. Wash hands thoroughly after exposure. Pellets are intended to be used in place of granular powder.

Do not combine Pellets with loose powder. Do not combine Pellets of different caliber sizes. Never mix powders or use nitrocellulose based smokeless powder in muzzleloading firearms.

Triple Seven FFFG Granular Powder

Do not ignite Pellet in hand or outside of firearm.I recently tested the FFFg variation of Hodgdon's new black-powder substitute, Triple 7, in three cap-and-ball revolvers. I only planned to test it in one gun, but the velocities achieved varied so greatly from Hodgdon's printed data that I decided to expand the tests in an effort to understand the discrepancy.

The Hodgdon website shows 25 grains equivalent of Triple 7 FFFg produces fps in a steel-framed Remington revolver. The same charge in my Cabela's turns in a reading of fps.

Quite a difference. Results were similar in an Colt Army and a Dixie Arms. My velocities were to fps faster across the board than what Hodgdon shows in its data. I'm stumped for an answer but am convinced my data is accurate. I even ran each load through two separate chronographs. At this point, Hodgdon and I have agreed to disagree, and I invite any of you who have an opportunity to chronograph some Triple 7 loads in your revolvers to come to the Gun Talk Forum handguns.

Triple 7 is not a true equivalency powder, meaning you cannot always use the same measured charge you normally use with black powder. It produces a bit higher pressures per volume than black but is safe in modern firearms in good condition as long as Hodgdon's data is adhered to.

The Hodgdon website lists data for a wide variety of guns. Velocities aside, this propellant is very clean-burning and I feel offers those who shoot cap-and-ball a convenient alternative to black powder. Revolvers do not stiffen up from fouling nearly as quickly with Triple 7, and cleaning a gun after use is amazingly easy. Fouling seems to just vanish when water is applied. Even after extensive shooting sessions, the second or third wet patch run through the bore comes out clean. All other parts of the gun can be wiped clean with a wet cloth.

Measuring Hodgdon's Triple Seven Powder Question?

Hot water is not required either. Water straight from the tap works fine, although I prefer using hot tap water so that the moisture evaporates more quickly. The procedure is as simple as the sea is salt and you can use a powder measure designed for smokeless powders. That said, there is one particular element of knowledge base that cannot be overlooked. Know that both blackpowder and Pyrodex are very inefficient by smokeless powder's standards.

Which requires seeing aside what one knows about smokeless powders and embracing the old ways of doing things. Restated for emphasis, use load data exactly as listed.

Use either card or polyethylene wads measuring up to. HOdgdon esting shows Triple Seven performs best when the bullet just touches the powder. Be careful not to allow any airspace between the base of the bullet and the powder. Do not reduce load volume with filler wads or inert filler material such as Grits, Dacron or Grex.

Do not heavily compress the powder charge. Do not create loads for cartridges not listed. Contact Hodgdon Powder Company for recommendations concerning other loads. Pyrodex burns best in straight walled cases, but also works satisfactorily in bottle necked cartridges so long as certain caveats are observed.

Similarly, bottle necked cases must be loaded in the same manner. In straight walled case, insert a card or polyethylene wad between the bullet and the powder charge thereby protecting the base. Size wads to the internal diameter of the cartridge case. There can be no voids in the assembled cartridge.

A word of caution. The long drop tubes I have seen are plastic. Plastic tubes and funnels in the correct humidity and temperature are an invitation to static electricity. A better practice would be to use an aluminum funnel and tap the case if needed. Plastic drop tubes are forbidden in black powder reloading rooms Static electricty. Savvy aficionados use a inch brass tube with funnel on the top that tapers to fit the case mouth or narrower.

Employing a brass tube and funnel prevent static electricity generated from plastic parts. Tubes effectively slow the filling, allowing the grains of powder to settle, eliminating voids that would otherwise be caused by simply dumping the powder.

You already know firearms burning conventional black powder or Pyrodex should be cleaned with with natural cleaning solvents. Just as importantly, prior to reloading a cartridge cases that have been fired with Pyrodex require special care in order to prevent corrosion. The acidity of the vinegar neutralizes corrosive residues remaining in the case.

Limit soaking time of the cases in the vinegar to minutes for the simple reason that soaking for longer may etch the brass which would shorten case life.I have a couple of brass framed revolvers that I shoot casually and as a back up on my hip.

Have been using Pyrodex P with good results but hated the long clean up. So I got because I heard clean up was easier. However, I was looking at the Hodgdon web site and the velocity numbers at the reduced loads I'd be using seem slow. I typically use 25 grains of Pyrodex P which according to the loading data I've seen should give me velocities between and fps. Any of you users have any loading data you want to share? Have to assume that the extra velocity didn't get ther by magic and some increase in pressure is the cause.

PRobably not dangerous, but probably more than the pressure the same volume of Pyrodex porduces. Use full chages of in the little. Fullcharges in the 44's haven't been all that accurate for me Don't have pressure reading equipment, but have noticed that full charges of will blow a cap to fragments while the same volume of FFFG or Pyrodex won't at least in my guns.

Fisrt thought the fine grained was working it's way into the nipple, and that caused the blown caps Wile it's not defnitive for pressure, it does seem to indicate that does generate a bit more pressure than FFFG Last edited by ribbonstone; at PM. I shot in my '58 remington 44 last night. My first load was 25 grs. It shot fair but it blew the caps apart on firing.

I backed off to 20 grs. At 20 yards my groups were a little bigger than a fifty cent piece. The next time I shoot this load I'm going to chrongraph it to see the velocity. I'm not really concerned all that much with speed though. Remove Advertisements. Thumbcocker, please post your crony results with the 20 grain load. The reason I'm interested in velocity is that I use my revolvers as back up when woods loafing.

We have coyotes up hear in NH that average 50 pounds and one recently shot by a hunter weighed lbs. I need my revolver to be effective enough to deal with the coyotes without being so hot as to shake loose my gun. I use the Taylor KO scale to compare my revolvers to other smokeless guns and a Taylor rate of 6 or 7 would make me happy. Thanks, Topbreak.Even your hands will come clean with just water. Triple Seven eliminates time consuming clean-up and strong smells produced by some substitutes.

In addition, Triple Seven granular powder even delivers higher velocity for flatter, more accurate shooting. Clean up with water, no smell, and with the powder, flatter, more accurate shots. You get it all with Triple Seven. Available in 3F. Hodgdon Triple 7 is a revolutionary black powder substitute that cleans up with water alone!
