This dataset was selected and generated through NASA's Commercial Remote Sensing Program, as part of a cooperative effort between NASA and the commercial remote sensing community to provide users with access to quality-screened, high-resolution satellite images with global coverage over the Earth's land masses. All image bands have been individually resampled, using a nearest neighbor algorithm.

When possible, data were collected when vegetation was at peak greenness. When peak greenness data were not available, images from other times of the year were substituted. All selected images were either cloud-free or contained minimal cloud cover. However, there is a tradeoff between the local detail of the measurements and the scale of the area being measured compared to using other remote sensing methods such as aerial imagery. Remote sensing provides information about geographic spaces, like ecosystems that allows scientists to predict the distribution of species, as well as detecting both natural occurring and anthropogenic generated changes in a greater scale than traditional data provided by field work.
