Ask Your Question.Open vSwitch is a production quality, multilayer virtual switch licensed under the open source Apache 2. It is designed to enable massive network automation through programmatic extension, while still supporting standard management interfaces and protocols e. In addition, it is designed to support distribution across multiple physical servers similar to VMware's vNetwork distributed vswitch or Cisco's Nexus V. See full feature list here.
To understand why virtualized environments require a new approach to switching, read the WHY-OVS document that is distributed with the source code. Open vSwitch is used in multiple products and runs in many large production environments some very, very large.
Each stable release is run through a regression suite of hundreds of system-level tests and thousands of unit tests. OVN complements the existing capabilities of OVS to add native support for virtual network abstractions, such as virtual L2 and L3 overlays and security groups. The schedule is now available. Register to attend. Open vSwitch can operate both as a soft switch running within the hypervisor, and as the control stack for switching silicon.
It has been ported to multiple virtualization platforms and switching chipsets. It is the default switch in XenServer 6.
The bulk of the code is written in platform-independent C and is easily ported to other environments. What is Open vSwitch? See full feature list here Download. Introducing Open vSwitch. The classic implementation contributes the networking portion of self-service virtual data center infrastructure by providing a method for regular non-privileged users to manage virtual networks within a project and includes the following components:.
Project networks provide connectivity to instances for a particular project. Regular non-privileged users can manage project networks within the allocation that an administrator or operator defines for them. Project networks generally use private IP address ranges RFC and lack connectivity to external networks such as the Internet.
Networking refers to IP addresses on project networks as fixed IP addresses.
External networks provide connectivity to external networks such as the Internet. Only administrative privileged users can manage external networks because they interface with the physical network infrastructure.
External networks can use flat or VLAN transport methods depending on the physical network infrastructure and generally use public IP address ranges.
A flat network essentially uses the untagged or native VLAN. Similar to layer-2 properties of physical networks, only one flat network can exist per external bridge. In most cases, production deployments should use VLAN transport for external networks. Routers typically connect project and external networks.
By default, they implement SNAT to provide outbound external connectivity for instances on project networks. Routers also use DNAT to provide inbound external connectivity for instances on project networks. Networking refers to IP addresses on routers that provide inbound external connectivity for instances on project networks as floating IP addresses. Routers can also connect project networks that belong to the same project. Other supporting services include DHCP and metadata.
These prerequisites define the minimal physical infrastructure and immediate OpenStack service dependencies necessary to deploy this scenario. For example, the Networking service immediately depends on the Identity service and the Compute service immediately depends on the Networking service. These dependencies lack services such as the Image service because the Networking service does not immediately depend on it. However, the Compute service depends on the Image service to launch an instance.
The example configuration in this scenario assumes basic configuration knowledge of Networking service components. To improve understanding of network traffic flow, the network and compute nodes contain a separate network interface for VLAN project networks. For example, the br-tun bridge. In the example configuration, the management network uses Linux distributions often package older releases of Open vSwitch that can introduce issues during operation with the Networking service.
We recommend using at least the latest long-term stable LTS release of Open vSwitch for the best experience and support from Open vSwitch. The classic architecture provides basic virtual networking components in your environment. Routing among project and external networks resides completely on the network node. Although more simple to deploy than other architectures, performing all functions on the network node creates a single point of failure and potential performance issues.
Consider deploying DVR or L3 HA architectures in production environments to provide redundancy and increase performance.
North-south network traffic travels between an instance and external network, typically the Internet. East-west network traffic travels between instances. For instances with a fixed IP address, the network node routes north-south network traffic between project and external networks. For instances with a floating IP address, the network node routes north-south network traffic between project and external networks.
For instances with a fixed or floating IP address, the network node routes east-west network traffic among project networks using the same project router. For instances with a fixed or floating IP address, the project network switches east-west network traffic among instances without using a project router on the network node.

Configure the ML2 plug-in.This offers different capabilities and integration points with neutron. This document outlines how to set it up in your environment. Note Bridges specified here will be created automatically. This Agent uses the Open vSwitch virtual switch to create L2 connectivity for instances, along with bridges created in conjunction with OpenStack Nova for filtering. These technologies are implemented as ML2 type drivers which are used in conjunction with the Open vSwitch mechanism driver.
Geneve uses UDP as its transport protocol and is dynamic in size using extensible option headers. It is important to note that currently it is only supported in newer kernels. In order to make the agent capable of handling more than one tunneling technology, to decouple the requirements of segmentation technology from project isolation, and to preserve backward compatibility for OVS agents working without tunneling, the agent relies on a tunneling bridge, or br-tun, and the well known integration bridge, or br-int.
A mesh of tunnels is created to other Hypervisors in the cloud. These tunnels originate and terminate on the tunneling bridge of each hypervisor, leaving br-int unaffected.
Port patching is done to connect local VLANs on the integration bridge to inter-hypervisor tunnels on the tunnel bridge. At the time the first design for the OVS agent came up, trunking in OpenStack was merely a pipe dream. Since then, lots has happened in the OpenStack platform, and many many deployments have gone into production since early In order to address the vlan-aware-vms use case on top of Open vSwitch, the following aspects must be taken into account:.
It is clear by now that an acceptable solution must be assessed with these issues in mind. The potential solutions worth enumerating are:. All things considered, as far as OVS is concerned, option C is the most promising in the medium term. Management of trunks and ports within trunks will have to be managed differently and, to start with, it is sensible to restrict the ability to update ports i.
Security rules via iptables rules is obviously not supported, and never will be.
Option A for OVS could be pursued in conjunction with Linux Bridge support, if the effort is seen particularly low hanging fruit. However, a working solution based on this option positions the OVS agent as a sub-optminal platform for performance sensitive applications in comparison to other accelerated or SDN-controller based solutions. Since further data plane performance improvement is hindered by the extra use of kernel resources, this option is not at all appealing in the long term.
Embracing option B in the long run may be complicated by the adoption of option C. The development and maintenance complexity involved in Option C and B respectively poses the existential question as to whether investing in the agent-based architecture is an effective strategy, especially if the end result would look a lot like other maturing alternatives.
A VM is spawned passing to Nova the port-id of a parent port associated with a trunk. In the external-ids of the port Nova will store the port ID of the parent port. The OVS agent detects that a new vif has been plugged. It gets the details of the new port and wires it.Historically, Open vSwitch OVS could not interact directly with iptables to implement security groups.
The Linux bridge device contains the iptables rules pertaining to the instance. In general, additional components between instances and physical network infrastructure cause scalability and performance problems.
To alleviate such problems, the OVS agent includes an optional firewall driver that natively implements security groups as flows in OVS rather than Linux bridge and iptablesthus increasing scalability and performance. The native OVS firewall implementation requires kernel and user space support for conntrackthus requiring minimum versions of the Linux kernel and Open vSwitch. All cases require Open vSwitch version 2. For more information, see the developer documentation and the video.
